Thiruvathirai Kali

We celebrate Thiruvathirai the birthday of Lord Shiva.It is also called Arudra Darshanam.This is an important festival for young girls. Early morning we take bath and go to the Shiva temple and worship lord Shiva.Prepare Kali and Talakam do puja with naivedyam and arathi..Keralites celebrate with dance and feast.
Ingredients
  • Raw rice .................................2 cups 
  • Jaggery .................................. 2cups 
  • Cardamom(Elaichi Powder)..... half tsp
  • Grated Coconut....................... half cup
  • Ghee ......................................2 tsp
  • Water......................................4cups

Method

  • Soak the rice for an hour.
  • Dry it by spreading them on a white cloth and roast the rice in a simmer flame until it turns light red colour. Powder it into coarsely when it cools down .
  • Heat a pan with water, add powdered jaggery.
  • When it boils add the rice powder . 
  • Add cardamom powder and coconut, mix it well

Nuts Burfi (Healthy Burfi)

 I used to make  ladu with cashew nuts, walnuts,gund, badam and flax seeds. This time I tried burfi and it came out well. No butter  and less sugar and healthy one.
Using flax seeds, all nuts and less sugar, No ghee
Nuts Burfi

Ingredients
  • Badam(Almonds)....................1 cup
  • Walnuts...................................1 cup
  • Cashew Nuts..........................1 cup
  • Flax Seeds...............................1 cup
  • Sugar.......................................1 cup
Method
  • Dry roast all nuts and flax seeds separately for 2 minutes and powder them coarsely .
  • Heat quarter cup of water and sugar.
  • When the water boils and get one string consistancey put off the flame
  • Add the mixture and mix well.
  • Spread the mixture in a greased plate
  • When it cool little cut them into desired shapes.
  • You can make this burfi in microwave.
  • Roast the gund in ghee and powder it. Add in the mixture(Optional)

Ingredients


For ada

  • Fresh Rice Powder.....................200gms
  • Sugar..........................................1/2 cup
  • Ghee...........................................1tsp
  • Small Plantain Leaves...................6

Method



  • Place the  plantain leaves directly on the gas and make them tender.
  • Add rice flour, sugar and ghee make a dough not too thick not too thin.
  • Sprinkle the dough with your hand on the leaves.
  • Roll the leaves and tie them both sides with thread.
  • Drop them in boiling water for 20 minutes.
  • Remove them and put them in cold water and keep them in strainer.
  • Cut the Adas into small.pieces
  • (You can buy in Indian stores)

Ada Pradhaman


Ingredients

  • Ada..............................1cup
  • Jaggery.........................1/2 kilo
  • Coconut........................2
  • Cardamom Powder.......1tsp
  • Coconut Pieces.............2tbsp
  • Cashew Nuts................2tbsp.

Meth



  • Grate the coconut and extract the milk Melt the jaggery
  • Fry the adas by adding ghee for few minutes.
  • Add the jaggery to the adas and boil for ten minutes.
  • Add the coconut milk and mix it well.
  • When the  mixture is about to boil, remove from the flame.
  • Add cardamom powder and roasted cashew nuts and coconut pieces.

Gothumbu Payasam (Broken Cracked Wheat Payasam)

Ingredients

  • Broken Cracked Wheat(Gothumbu Rava)...1/4 cup
  • Powdered Jaggery......................................1/2 cup
  • Coconut milk..............................................1/2 cup
  • Cardamom Powder.....................................1/4 stp
  • Cashew Nuts and Coconut Pieces...............3tbap
  • Ghee..........................................................1tsp

Method


  • Wash the broken wheat and cook it in pressure cooker.
  • Melt the jaggery and filter it and add to the broken wheat.
  • When all mixed well , add the coconut milk.
  • Add cardamom powder, roasted cashew nuts and coconut pieces.

Ellu Kozhakattai

 Ingredients

  • White Sesame Seeds................1/2 cup
  • Jaggery........................................1/3 cup
  • Rice Flour....................................1/2 cup
  • Coconut Oil.................................1tsp
  • Salt a Pinch
Method
  • Dry roast the sesame seeds.
  • Powder the sesame seeds and then add jaggery grind till they are mixed well.
  • Form small balls and keep
  • Boil one cup of water. Add one tsp of oil and salt.
  • Take the rice flour in a pan and add the hot water  and make a thick dough.
  • Grease your palm and take a small ball size dough, flatten it.
  • Keep the sesame ball in the middle and seal the sides.
  • Steam all the kozhakais in a idli vessel.

  • Roasted Peanuts........1 cup
  • Grated Coconut...........1cup
  • Powdered Jaggery.......1cup
  • Ghee...........................1tbsp

Method

  • Powder the peanuts coarsely.
  • Heat a pan with little water add jaggery and coconut.
  • Mix well till the mixture become thick
  • Add ghee and peanuts powder and remove from the flame
  • Make small balls.

Chikoo Halwa

  • Chikoo.................................5
  • Sugar...................................1/4cup
  • Milk.....................................1/2cup
  • Milk Powder or Koya..........100gms
  • Ghee....................................1tbsp

Method

  • Peel the skin of the chikoos and mash or blend
  • Heat a pan add mashed chickoo, milk and boil
  • When it becomes thick add koya and cook.
  • Add sugar and ghee.
  • Cook in low flame.
  • When the ghee comes little up add broken nuts.

This is a south Indian sweet.very rarely we make this. We use whole moong dhal and raw rice, jaggery, dry ginger to make this recipe.To eat this sweet your teeth should be strong otherwise teeth will be in your hands, It is very hard orundai but very tasty.,

Ingredients


  • Whole Moong Dhal...........................1cup
  • Raw Rice..........................................1/4 cup
  • Jaggery..............................................2cups
  • Dry Ginger.........................................1/2tsp
  • Cardamom Powder............................1/2 tsp
  • Coconut Pieces...................................2tbsp

Method


  • Dry roast the dhal and rice separately into golden.
  • Powder them into fine.Mix the coconut pieces, dry ginger and cardamom.
  • Make a jaggery syrup adding half cup of water.check a tsp syrup by dropping into water.
  • If it becomes candy like then it is ready.
  • Take little syrup and add little powder and make small balls.
  • Repeat this till the syrup and powder finishes.
  • You should make the balls when it is  warm(Can add all syrup into powder and make balls too)
  • We are not adding ghee. So make the balls part by part.
  • It is very healthy and can keep for many months.
